Fundraiser for Heyva Sor
In the early hours of Monday morning on 6th February 2023, Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria were shaken by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, followed by a 7.6 earthquake, with dozens of aftershocks.
At the time of writing on 8th February, more than 11,000 people have lost their lives, and tens of thousands are injured. Thousands of people are still under the rubble and the death toll is expected to increase significantly in the coming days.
Houses, infrastructural facilities, and entire villages are destroyed. Freezing winter conditions negatively affect search and rescue operations, with electricity, water, internet and resource distribution of food and shelter intermittent and difficult to access.
The Turkish state is responding very slowly with humanitarian assistance in the Kurdish areas. Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê (the Kurdish Red Crescent) is sending emergency aid to the earthquake victims. Heyva Sor only collects financial aid and will deliver it to families in need of urgent help in a short time.
The earthquakes were strongly felt in many regions of north Kurdistan, especially in the cities of Kahramanmaraş, Adiyaman, Malatya, Gaziantep, Hatay, Şanliurfa, Adana, Kilîs, Diyarbakır, Osmaniye and Kayseri in Turkey, and in Afrin, Latakia, Kobanî and Aleppo in north Syria. It is reported that the earthquake also affected the neighbouring countries.
We call on the world community to help these earthquake victims during this terrible crisis.
